Topic: Media, Consumption and Identity,,A media culture has emerged in our time in which images, sounds and spectacles constitute major threads in the fabric of everyday life. These tend to dominate leisure, shape political views, public opinion and social behavior; and provide many of the materials and frames out of which people forge their very identity. TV, radio, cell phones, movies, newspapers, magazines, advertising, and of course the world of the Internet and social media, among other products of the so-called 'culture industries' are indeed important factors in constructing prevalent views of the world. They are especially effective at furnishing us with models of what it means to be female or male, a success or a failure, 'good' or 'evil', violent or peaceful, and so on. Media stories and images introduce into our midst symbols and myths that help to constitute a common culture shared by many or even most individuals in most parts of the world today. ,,This course will introduce students to the growing body of literature on the relationship between mass media, consumption, society, and culture. Particular emphasis will be given to the ever-growing role of the media as a socializing agent, as well as on its impact on the construction of perceptions of 'us' and 'others', that is, on ethnic and racial relations, on class differences, and on notions of 'cultural hierarchy.' In short, in the construction and internalization of particular worldviews.
